David Guralnick, of Kaleidoscope Learning, on how AI and immersive tech are transforming education

My guest, David Guralnick, of Kaleidoscope Learning, has spent years studying the ways that technology can provide meaningful and relevant learning experiences that capture people’s natural instincts to learn. In his book, “How Organizations Can Make the Most of Online Learning,” he notes that “Online learning has the potential to revolutionize workplace learning and performance, and we’re at a time now in which, partly thanks to new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (AR), and augmented reality (AR), that potential could be finally realized.”

David and I explore how existing technologies are now combining to open a new frontier in tech-assisted education. Our conversation emphasizes the need for education to adapt to changing learner needs and provide more accessible, engaging, and meaningful experiences. Along the way we discuss topics including:

  • How traditional learning models are being replaced by immersive experiences with technology.
  • The potential of AI-augmented simulations in education and marketing.
  • Why learning experience designers need to be cognizant of the fact that people have different preferences and ways of learning.
  • Why the educational world can learn from marketing’s focus on relevance and engagement.
  • Why using an ROI model when evaluating the effectiveness of training is often a great mistake.
  • How elements of gamification such as teams, leaderboards, and badges are being incorporated into learning experiences.
  • Why understanding learner types (visual, auditory, activity-based) can inform engagement strategies.
  • How AI can be used to evaluate performance and provide private feedback.
  • The degree to which technology costs will soon come down, making VR more accessible for mainstream audiences.
